I think his point is even from the very beginning she’s been taking all the abnormal stuff rather well {mothers not withstanding}, most shy folks wouldn’t be talking to goat-men, hitching rides from hippies, or handling mind-reading powers with surprising amount of restraint and control {once she understood how it worked at least.}.
