She knew she could do it because she’d already done worse things to her mom. By making peace with her mom, she both begins to repair that relationship and frees up the mental resources to gag Loki.

She’s been pushed around by people since the very beginning of the comic, and now, she finally has the upper hand on the smug SOB, that has been a thorn in not just her side, but all of her friends as well. She has managed to get one over on Loki, which is no small feat. I think she is entitled to gloat over her victory here.
