The trouble with Cyril’s proposal here lies in considering the inverse: One knows exactly where one stands with the “backbiting harpies” as well, but at least they will leave you alone if pushed hard enough.

If the guesses people were making about the “substitute chaperone” earlier were true (and if I’m remembering those guesses correctly), then someone might soon be taking offense to Cyril’s use of the phrase “backbiting harpies.”
