I find this problem exists in a lot of modern media, not just in romantic comedies, and frankly I blame bad writing. It’s not terribly difficult to make someone likable or unlikable, but that comes from fleshing out the character and making them more than one-dimensional. The reason this problem is particularly pervasive in romantic comedies (or comedies in general) is that the characters ALL tend to be one-dimensional; the characters have no depth beyond the role they are playing.

It’s very hard to have a cast of one-dimensional characters in a tragedy or darker film, which is probably why I prefer watching those films.

i’m with you there, in regards to a LOT of rom-coms.

first thing to sprint to mind is the adjustment bureau, which (though not a rom-com) contains the magical I KNOW I TOTALLY LET YOU BEHIND AT THAT HOSPITAL BUT PLEASE TRUST ME and then SHE DOES GOD DAMNIT WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF WOMAN. (although that movie had a legitimate reason it still pissed me off because WHAT ABOUT THE MAN SHE LEFT AT THE ALTAR LIKE TWICE)

After reading a certain “Tangled” fanfic lately, I only have that movie on the brain… and I don’t think it’s a rom-com, so I have nothing valuable to contribute other than Pan’s face in the second frame makes me giggle.

I HATE romantic comedies, even if the said people aren’t dumping the ones they’re already with for the protagonists.

For one thing, sometimes the protagonists are just simply too unlikable to me, even with all the wacky hi-jinks they get into. and apparently some of their bad behavior is just magically forgotten with the fluffy happy ending for them.

Not all romantic comedies are an entire success? If I remember right, the lead protagonist didn’t really win in “My best friend’s wedding”, even though she almost did.
