It would be interesting to explain the situation in such as to

A) Relieve Mom’s guilt

B) Not alarm her even worse.

The easiest solution might be for Dani to put her back in happy land, but that has its own moral and practical problems…

Both. First its a mother’s worse nightmare and it’s compounded with her thinking she’s lost her mind to not really notice until now. Or not so much not notice but not seem to care.
