Latino comes from “lationamericano” and as far as I remember it was invented in the XIX century as way to distinguish americans (as the continent) who spoke english and americans who spoke romance languages. Unfortunately they exclude people who speak auctotonous languages but that was XIX century, so it’s not surprised.

Funny you hate the term latino, personally I hate the term hispanic… but I guess it depends the place you live.

Hi, I’m white.

My best friend is in the same boat. Her mother is Puerto Rican, but my friend has never been there, so she can’t truly identify. Since we live near the Mexican border, everyone assumes she’s Mexican, and she gets angry about that (so does my friend from Belize). She doesn’t like the terms Spanish, since she’s not from Spain, even if waaaaaay back her family was from there. She also does not like “Latino,” since that designates a language more than a nationality, and she speak only limited Spanish. She’ll accept “Puerto Rican” only to appease everyone, but she prefers being called simply “American.” Most of us are products of melting pots anyway. That’s why I prefer my usual answer:

“I’m a Heinz 57 American. I’m like ketchup: a little of everything and tastes good with anything!”

That all came as me voicing my own opinions about PC naming. My parents are Cuban, I was born in Puerto Rico but have lived in U.S. since I was about five. You can say I’m Cuban but I’ve never been there and know only what my parents have told me about it. I don’t like being called Puerto Rican cause I never knew the place good enough to identify it. I hate the term Latino. It sounds so artificial and pretentious. And why does the Spanish speaking world get called Latino but Italians are Italians? They’re the ones that invented Latin for pete’s sake. If you have to identify my ethnic background I prefer Spanish or even Hispanic.

I imagine it’d be pretty out of character for Catherin to start explaining everything regarding her dad dying. She’s hardly an open book. At least that was what I thought of her.
